We read the Build Back Better Act so you don't have to!

Sep 13, 2023

In 2021, United States Administration passed the Build Better Act. The original bill included $3.5 trillion in funding for a variety of causes. Some of them include, child care, elderly care, health care, education, and most importantly - climate change! Instead of looking though all the different versions of the bill and what it means for you. We’ve broken down the four ways the BBBA would combat climate change.

  1. Reduces cost for middle class families switching to clean energy with rebates.

  2. Incentivizes domestic supply chains to produce clean energy products, like solar panels.

  3. Accelerate clean energy projects around the country by investing in them and using 40% of the return to help disadvantaged communities.

  4. Support the climate smart agriculture initiatives of as many as 240,000 farms.

The Build Back Better Act is “The largest effort to combat climate change in American history,” says The White House. “The framework will cut greenhouse gas pollution by well over one gigaton in 2030, reduce consumer energy costs, give our kids cleaner air and water, create hundreds of thousands of high-quality jobs, and advance environmental justice by investing in a 21st century clean energy economy – from buildings, transportation, industry, electricity, and agriculture to climate smart practices across our lands and waters.”‍

One of the most important items to come from the BBBA is the rebates offered to middle class families. “The consumer rebates and credits included in the Build Back Better framework will save the average American family hundreds of dollars per year in energy costs.” - The White House

“Deliver substantial consumer rebates and ensure middle class families save money as they shift to clean energy and electrification.  These measures include enhancement and expansion of existing home energy and efficiency tax credits, as well as the creation of a new, electrification-focused rebate program.  The framework will cut the cost of installing rooftop solar for a home by around 30 percent, shortening the payback period by around 5 years; and the framework’s electric vehicle tax credit will lower the cost of an electric vehicle that is made in America with American materials and union labor by $12,500 for a middle-class family. In addition, the framework will help rural communities tap into the clean energy opportunity through targeted grants and loans through the Department of Agriculture.” - The White House

Since its inception, a lot has happened to this bill. One of them being an overall funding decrease of more than $1.5 trillion. In November of 2021, the bill was passed with $500 billion designated to climate change - particularly for more rebates and credits. Since then, the future of the bill has been uncertain but one thing is clear, climate change has been made a top priority for both sides of the administration.
