Have you ever felt like solar is a foreign language? With all the acronyms and different terms, it’s no wonder! Frugll’s mission is to simplify solar for you. Here are the top 10 solar terms you should know:
Renewable energy– energy from a source that is not depleted when used, such as wind, solar, or hydropower.
PV Cell– The smallest element within a PV module. It’s job is to convert the light from the sun into electrical energy (DC energy).
PV Module– Also known as a PV panel, a module is made of hundreds of cells that are bound together and covered with material to protect them from the elements. Learn more about how PV modules work here.
PV Array– An array is a group of modules that work together as one part of the PV system. This is the part of the system that generates the electricity.
PV System– A complete set of technology for converting sunlight into electricity. Including the PV array, inverter, battery, meter, and electrical panel.
Inverter– The device in the system that converts direct current electricity to alternating current. The piece is required whether the energy is being used immediately, stored in a battery, or sent to the grid.
AC (Alternating Current)– An electric current that periodically reverses direction and changes its magnitude continuously with time. This is the type of energy that your appliances use.
DC (Direct Current)– An electric current that is uni-directional, so the flow of charge is always in the same direction. This is the type of energy your panels produce.
PTO (Permission to Operate)– This is the green light for your system to start turning sunlight into electricity. To reach PTO, you must have approval from your utility and pass all inspections. You can learn more about the road to PTO here.
Kilowatt (kW)– A standard unit of electrical power equal to 1000 watts. A watt is the rate of energy transfer equivalent to one ampere under an electrical pressure of one volt.
